Kevin Crow violin, #27, "Catterina", Wisconsin, 2023 | Metzler Violins
brilliant, supple, versatile
About this Instrument
This violin sings in its upper registers and gives a powerful depth across registers, making it for an excellent solo instrument. The luthier shaded this instrument such that the golden ground shines through the apricot varnish to make for a beautiful shading particularly across the two-piece back. The medium curl falls from the centerjoint, with similar flames running along the ribs and scroll. The luthier named this instrument modeled on a Guarneri del Gesù “Catterina” in honor of Catterina Guarneri—the wife of Giuseppie Guarneri “del Gesù." Historians and violin experts believe that Catterina had a major role in the building of del Gesù instruments and unfortunately remains an unsung heroine of the violin world.
