About the Instrument
This viola has a nimble playability with a sweet sound, making it easy and enjoyable to play. A subtle flame figure falls slightly from the treble side of the single-piece maple back. Similar flames run along the ribs and scroll. This viola’s apricot varnish is applied over a wheat ground, which shines through the luthier’s thoughtful shading. This instrument has been antiqued by its maker as an homage to the original upon which it is based. As with original Giovanni Paolo Maggini instruments, this viola’s the f-holes are elongated, the scroll has the effect of being tightly curled, and its top and back archings are wider than most violas to help capture the rich sound of original Maggini instruments.

About the Maker

Kevin Crow is a contemporary luthier based in Madison, Wisconsin. After a career in education, Crow attended the Chicago School of Violin Making where he studied the works of the Cremoni masters: Stradivari, Guarneri, Amati, and Guadagnini. Crow later apprenticed under the luthier Carl F. Becker in Chicago before opening his own shop in Wisconsin.
